Law & Gospel

The Law is for the proud and the Gospel for the brokenhearted
- Martin Luther

"For Moses writes about the righteousness that is based on the law, that the person who does the commandments shall live by them." Romans 10:5

For all who rely on works of the law are under a curse; for it is written, "Cursed be everyone who does not abide by all things written in the Book of the Law, and do them." Now it is evident that no one is justified before God by the law, for "The righteous shall live by faith." But the law is not of faith, rather "The one who does them shall live by them." - Galatians 3:10-12 (quoting Deut 21:23, Deut 27:26, Hab 2:4, and Lev 18:5)

Theology FAQs With answers drawn from the whole of Scripture, we briefly and concisely cover some of the most common questions about Christianity and Christian theology. We wholly affrim that all Scripture points to Christ and so while you may find similar questions elsewhere, if you are not familiar with Reformed theology, these answers may be quite different than what you are used to. They press the point home that those who have been converted to Christ are joined to Him by the sovereign, merciful work of God Himself and all the benefits of this salvation come to us only because of union with Christ. We can never seperate the benefits from the benefactor. Here is a starting list for our Theological FAQs -- we hope to add more questions as time allows.

Historic Creeds and Confessions
A Creed, or Rule of Faith, or Symbol, is a confession of faith for public use, or a form of words setting forth with authority certain articles of belief, which are regarded by the framers as necessary for salvation, or at least for the well-being of the Christian Church.

Hall of Contemporary Reformers
- Servants of God who faithfully proclaim the gospel in our time, and whom the Lord is now using to preserve that silver thread of orthodoxy that God has preserved through the ages.

Sinimbooks.com We carry Christian titles that are Chinese, Reformed and Christ-honoring. "Sinim" is a word that comes from the Bible in Isaiah 49:12: "Behold, these will come from afar; And lo, these will come from the north and from the west, And these from the land of Sinim." In context, this verse speaks of the gathering of true Israel from all parts of the world (43:5,6), even far away places like Sinim, an ancient name for what is now called China.

Church History
"It is wrong to suppose that the doctrine of justification by faith alone, that storm center of the Reformation, was the crucial question in the minds of such theologians as Martin Luther, Ulrich Zwingli, Martin Bucer, and John Calvin. This doctrine was important to the Reformers because it helped to express and to safeguard their answer to another, more vital, question, namely, whether sinners are wholly helpless in their sin, and whether God is to be thought of as saving them by free, unconditional, invincible grace, not only justifying them for Christs' sake when they come to faith, but also raising them from the death of sin by His quickening Spirit in order to bring them to faith." - Michael Haykin

Definition of Monergism: The view that the Holy Spirit is the only agent who effects regeneration of Christians. It is in contrast with synergism, the view that there is a cooperation between the divine and the human in the regeneration process. Monergism is a redemptive blessing purchased by Christ for those the Father has given Him (1 Pet 1:3, John 3:5,6, 6:37, 39). This grace works independently of any human cooperation and conveys that power into the fallen soul whereby the person who is to be saved is effectually enabled to respond to the gospel call (John 1:13; Acts 2:39, 13:48; Rom 9:16).
